Welcome to the Samala Chumash Language Tutorial!    Richard Applegate, Ph.D.

The Chumash Languages   These pages are designed to be user-friendly for people without formal training in linguistics. The lessons start from scratch and guide you through the topics necessary to pronounce Samala and start putting together simple phrases, and it builds from there. These pages make Samala accessible to anyone who's willing to learn it.

You'll learn some technical terms to study a language with a structure and sound system so different from English, but technical jargon is at minimum here. If you see a term like "person marker" or "glottalization," you'll also find an explanation when it first appears and the glossary is only a click or two away.

This site was formerly called the "Inezeño Chumash" Language Tutorial. The members of the Santa Ynez band have reclaimed the ancestral name of their people and language —
Samala.

Look in the Vocabulary Illustrated pages for images with Samala captions. Page 3 has sound clips in mp3 format. You can click on the image on Page 3 or the images below to hear the word pronounced.
