Mac instructions for inserting phonetic symbols into your documents

On a Mac there are fewer options for inserting these phonetic symbols into your documents. Click on the symbol to go directly to instructions for inserting it: Back to PC instructions for inserting symbols.
                     

Note:  The special symbols on the pages of this tutorial are tiny graphic images that sit among the regular letters of the text. They will print out if you print the page, but they won't come out if you copy the text and try to save it in another document.

You can copy them for use on a web page, but they don't work for email or in word-processor documents.

To the best of my knowledge there's no way to insert the special symbol in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint for the Mac. If you know of a way, please let me know.

You could substitute the cent sign ¢ for , although this is not an elegant solution. In Mac Word, go to the Insert menu, select Symbol, choose the normal font option and navigate to ¢. Select it and click Insert and Close.

"Barred I" — or  ï ("I Umlaut")

On a typewriter you can backspace and type a hyphen over a regular I.

In Microsoft Word you can add the "strikethrough" feature to a regular I. Be aware that the line of the strikethrough is thin and doesn't stand out very well.

Or you can also insert the special symbol ï from the Insert Symbol screen. The symbol ï — called "I umlaut" — is sometimes used as an alternative for . There are two ways to insert ï.

  Easier way:
  1. Hold down the Option key while you type in U.
  2. Then press I. The ï appears.

  Harder way:
  1. Click on Insert in upper menu bar.
  2. Select Symbol.
  3. Choose the normal font option.
  4.

Navigate to  ï and select it.

  5. Click on Insert.
  6. Click on Close.

On a typewriter you can shift the carriage up half a line to type a regular h.

In Microsoft Word and PowerPoint you can add the "superscript" feature to a regular h.
  1. Select the h that you want to raise.
  2.

Click on Format in the top tool bar.

  3. Click on Font.
  4. Go to Effects.
  5. Click on Superscript.
  6. Click OK.

Warning:  Be sure to select just the h first. If you try to raise a h and keep typing, everything you type after it will be raised as a superscript too.

The symbol ñ is easy to insert because more familiar languages such as Spanish use it.

You can insert symbol ñ in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
  1.

Click on Insert in the top tool bar.

  2. Click on Symbol. A window of special symbols comes up.
  3. Choose normal font.
  4. Navigate to ñ.
  5. To insert it once and go on, click Insert and Close.

In email, you can also insert ñ. Hold down the Option key while you type in N, then press N. The ñ appears.
